Thankfully all we got was some wind and high tides. It still takes a full day of storm prep to get her ready. Many thanks to Luis Acevedo, my Mexican friend and fishing mate from years past who was in town for a few days and spent the day before the storm helping me set anchors and extra lines. Our friend Joseph the spearfisherman stopped by with one of his children and gave us three octopus and four lobster for lunch. Yum! The sail home was subject to contrary winds, squalls, and way too much motorsailing. We arrived in Marathon on the morning of July 4 and back in Naples the following morning. The schooner had been taking on water from an unknown source for the past three weeks and Shaquille and I took to Ft. Myers for a haulout on July 6th. I'll be driving up to the yard today to try and find the source of the intrusion and hopefully a quick fix. Attached are some pics from the past couple weeks. Thank you for all your prayers and support for this voyage, hope to hear from you soon! Capt. Bob

Star of the Seahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06343359760608793288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-81030150406469121612012-06-27T11:45:00.008-07:002012-06-27T12:35:56.816-07:00lle a vache offload<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LsIz6pRMKpk/T-tgdZ_skdI/AAAAAAAAAK4/4Uao2uk-gwo/s320/P6250172.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758802606833832402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4diod9DZNt4/T-tez0VWNqI/AAAAAAAAAKs/3trbVNgA4sk/s320/P6230119.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758800792837830306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0YsVI35pzas/T-teEi3KqkI/AAAAAAAAAKg/Ydm7XR3_NPc/s320/P6250155.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758799980693989954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qq1cVDY7lJA/T-tdSrciqgI/AAAAAAAAAKU/y_CMQ6-tyUc/s320/P6230112.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758799124004776450" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-brDsNUOzy58/T-tcxFZHTGI/AAAAAAAAAKI/b_pD5VgXCx8/s320/P6230104.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758798546854169698" />
The trip down from Inagua went smoothly until we arrived at the west tip of the southern arm of Haiti. Wind went from 15 knots to 35 on the nose and seas from 2-4ft. to 8-10ft.
Being fully loaded and discretion being the better part of valor I reversed course and we hid out in a small cove northwest of the village of Tiburon until the sun set and the wind died down to the point of being manageable. I like to arrive in the dark so as to not telegraph our arrival and because of the delay we didn't drop anchor until 0630 at Port Morgan. Sister Flora's boat came immediately and we offloaded all the Meals of Hope by the end of the day. The orphanage is doing well and our cargo of food, medical supplies, and the dresses and shorts that were made by Sewing Hands were well received. Our Naples contact that supplied 1,000 used tennis balls from Collier's Reserve would have smiled if he could see the joy of the children upon receiving tennis balls! What a hit the balls make and it's fun to see the kids happiness with such a simple thing. Bill Clinton is due to arrive to the island for a visit tomorrow and I had a long talk with a couple of the Secret Service agents assigned to his detail. Things are changing in this part of the world, for the better? only time will tell. We are hoping for the weather to break tomorrow and we will depart for Florida. The schooner is having a few issues of concern and I will be relieved to be back in Florida waters soon!!

Star of the Seahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06343359760608793288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-23042269512616990012012-06-27T07:20:00.003-07:002012-06-27T11:09:23.068-07:00Inagua loadin<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dQsIsdu1dLQ/T-tL9eEhEzI/AAAAAAAAAJI/K3i3Vb1gcPA/s320/P6200074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758780067939423026" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wizKHbiu4mA/T-tL8m18EII/AAAAAAAAAI8/K0P6VTxrXLE/s320/P6200075.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758780053114327170" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RHdKbq-6ars/T-tL8Yyea8I/AAAAAAAAAIw/i66xM6yn_ds/s320/P6190069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758780049341705154" />
After enjoying the wonderful hospitality at Bob Pratt's Southside Marina and an uneventful sail from Provo we arrived at Great Inagua early in the morning. Customs went fairly smoothly and once again Brother Carl helped with the money for the transshipment bond. The little harbor was full with captured drug freighters and other local boats so we moved boats around so we could squeeze in for the loading process. We got all the cargo aboard and secured by 1830 and then stood offshore while we made ready for sea and ate dinner. Underway by 2100 for the Windward passage and Haiti!

Star of the Seahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06343359760608793288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-32802883119705348132012-06-10T07:29:00.004-07:002012-06-10T08:03:34.541-07:00Land Ho! The children from the Old Bight Mission Home arrived to offload cargo in the afternoon when school had let out. Five pickup truck loads later, all cargo was delivered to the home. To our surprise our former shipmate Shaquille Moss who had traveled to Haiti with us last summer had decided to postpone his pilot training for a month and will accompany the crew for the rest of the voyage. On June 8 we had the pleasure of attending Shaquille's high school graduation ceremony! On June 6 Zach was able to make the first delivery of over 500 lbs. of medical supplies to the local clinic here on Cat Island. His charity, Open Vessel Missions, has another thousand pounds of medical supplies aboard that will go to Sister Flora's mission on Lle a Vache, Haiti. We have spent the past few days with some boat projects and a much needed nap and also a little sightseeing on the island. We will leave for Provo. in the morning and after taking on fuel and water there we will sail to Inagua to load in the Meals of Hope that were donated by Estero United Methodist Church. Oh yea... fuel is $6.45 a gallon here.....Yikes

Star of the Seahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06343359760608793288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-45621365977438025752012-06-10T07:14:00.002-07:002012-06-10T07:27:53.923-07:00Fair Winds and Following Seas<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-U84sZuo20qE/T9Su1RTkkVI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/objRmpeGbgM/s320/photo.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5752414854260756818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zcBgzUtdEqY/T9Su1BauyKI/AAAAAAAAAHE/cV_Ymm8lZKk/s320/P5310019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5752414849995819170" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TNk18Puqq70/T9Su0gujXTI/AAAAAAAAAG4/ASGHtNsrd9E/s320/P5310015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5752414841220586802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--8EPm8z2yY4/T9Su0DQ634I/AAAAAAAAAGo/W0BzPJ0c3f8/s320/P5310012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5752414833311670146" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e1-IpenMNns/T9SuziZCNPI/AAAAAAAAAGg/BtJohWd-us4/s320/photo%2B%25281%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5752414824487335154" />
The ship and crew had a fair weather crossing of the gulf stream on our way to the Exumas where we spent time with old friends and made new ones. "Summer crabs" were in abundance this year and I'm happy to report that there was fewer lion fish to shoot this year than in the past. Zach and Javier were able to visit the beautiful Thunderball Cave in Staniel Cay and we spent a couple days at Little Farmers Cay where we attended a very uplifting Sunday service at the local Baptist Church. On the way to Cat Island now, we should arrive on June 5. Capt. This year's race was run in horrendous conditions with wind speeds of 40kts plus at times. I was able to make it to Flamingo (checkpoint 3) after suffering a massive rig failure in the Shark River. My Hobie Tandem Island was a great pick for the race but was not alot of fun to pedal into a stiff wind from my breakdown point to Flamingo (26 miles). The being shipwrecked part was awesome as I was able to sleep.....and enjoy the nature that is in abundance in that part of the world. Ellen met me in Flamingo with the trailer and we loaded up and drove to the finish line in Key Largo to enjoy the festivities. Only 17 of 80 boats finished this year and the fleet was filled with damaged and broken gear. EC300 2013...... Maybe! Thank you to all my sponsors, the race was a successful fundraiser for New Horizons and the children in our programs! Videos can be seen on utube if you search backwaterbobec2012 Capt. The schooner departed for another Call to Adventure voyage on December 27 and returned to port on New Year's Eve. First mate Zach Griffin drove down from Arkansas for the trip and bonded with the boys through sail handling and confidence training. We sailed north to Charlotte Harbor in light rain and dropping temperatures. By the following day sunny skies prevailed and stayed that way for the duration of the trip. We day-sailed for the first three days, picking a different anchorage each night. On our final day underway we anchored off of Picnic Island at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River and went ashore for a fogata (bonfire). We continued in our study of the Beatitudes and focused on self control and the decision making process as young men. When asked, most of the crew would say that their favorite part of the voyage was either 'pillaging' the village of Boca Grande or the famous schooner burgers we had for lunch aboard one day. Both Zach and I are very proud of these young men, the schooner is such an equalizer when it comes to teaching teenagers. One of the young men has expressed an interest in crewing to Haiti and the Bahamas this spring, now that would be a New Horizon!
Wishing you fair winds in the New Year.... Capt. I would like to thank Mr. Wayne Huizenga Jr. and the crew at Rybovich Boatyard North for all their help in our recent bottom job. New friend and volunteer Kevin came in on two occasions and helped with the black hull painting and the nasty task of shoveling up 4 tons of coal slag dust after the hull had been blasted, not a fun day! I would also like to thank Bill and Sea Hawk Premium Yacht Finishes for their generous donation of the material needed to perform the maintenance. We used Sea Hawk two part epoxy and anti-fouling bottom paint to complete the job. I am very impressed with the performance of their products! The epoxy is a high build formula that allows for thick coatings with fewer layers, and the ablative anti-fouling paint will provide years of protection from underwater critters. In an answer to prayer, a generous donor came forward and provided the money needed to pay for the coal slag blasting and other associated costs incurred while on the hard. It was a long month, I put over 3,000 miles on Ellen's car traveling from Bonita Springs to Rivera Beach and for the times that I stayed in Rivera Beach for multiple days at a time I want to thank Rick and Shelly for hosting me in their beautiful home. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Call to Adventure trip over the Christmas holiday. We are sailing with some teen boys from the New Horizons Teen Program. We hope for them to receive their scuba certification on this trip. Former crewman to Haiti, Zach Griffin, will be joining on this trip as first mate. We need donations to feed the boys on this trip so if you haven't already made a charitable donation for 2011 please consider this opportunity.
Have a blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year! When we hauled out all looked good until the pressure washer started peeling back the epoxy barrier coat (separates the steel from the anti-fouling paint). The barrier coat had failed from age more than anything else but to reapply the bottom has to be blasted to prepare the steel. The whole process is very expensive and my donated bottom job had turned into a real concern. Standing firm in prayer is all I can do......and did.....what a blessing when a generous donor came forward to help with the yard expenses and Sea Hawk Paints has donated all the material!!! I hope to have her coated by Thanksgiving and home the following week. Talk about a reason to give thanks this year................ I have many! Capt. Mr. Wayne Huizenga Jr., owner of the Rybovich Superyacht Marina, has generously donated a bottom job for the Star. As you may know rust never sleeps so I've been grinding and sanding for the past two weeks. I've been very impressed with the facility and crew at Rybovich, everyone has gone out of their way to be helpful. Plans are already in the works for the next trip to Cat Island and Haiti. Hurricane Irene devastated most of Cat Island but Brother Moss reports that the orphanage sustained light damage with some missing windows and gutters being the worst of it. My mom and sister have organized a sewing effort to make 200 dresses and 200 pairs of shorts for delivery on the next trip! The young men in the Call to Adventure program are now studying to receive their scuba diving certification. We will be sailing to the keys for their open water check dive over the Christmas Holidays. Until then the Star has several fundraising commitments to fulfill and an all girl overnight sail in November with my wife Ellen and Sarah Egner a marine biologist at Marine Lab and co founder of EcoKeys LLC of Key Largo. Please consider New Horizons of Southwest Florida in your year end giving. We rely on your support to continue our work with those in need. Capt. The village of Cacor (ca-ah-coc) is across the harbor from Port Morgan and the home for Villeme our translator. We had given Villeme the responsibility of providing clean water for his village using the two Sawyer gravity feed filtration buckets that were donated by Capt. John Puig of Naples. After set up and instruction we set off on a hike across the island to Abaka Bay. Lle a Vache is known to Haitians as the Hidden Treasure and our hike confirmed the beauty of the island. Even with all it's problems, this little corner of Haiti shows a lot of promise.

<input type="image" src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/WEBSCR-640-20110429-1/en_US/i/btn/btn_donateCC_LG.gif" border="0" name="submit" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">PayPal - The safer, easier way to pay online!">Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-19800727957172507152011-07-17T17:41:00.000-07:002011-07-17T18:13:04.738-07:00July 5th

With a successful first day behind us today we concentrated on discharging the rest of the cargo, cleaning the schooner interior and granting the crew some shore leave. Port Morgan was very generous with us, granting us access to their salt water pool and giving the crew some time to get their land legs back. A local fisherman who we had brought a used sail for brought us a dozen lobsters in appreciation for the sail. Our Spanish friend Alen, the master of the paella, came aboard to create a lobster paella. Solo sailor and founder of the Ocean's Watch organization, Donna Lange, sailed into Port Morgan with a solar oven and composting toilet project to administer. Donna is also a professional musician and her presence at dinner brought with it a guitar, steel drum, flute and harmonicas. With Sharky on the five gallon bucket, Dave on guitar, and Donna on the steel drum the schooner was rockin.

<input type="image" src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/WEBSCR-640-20110429-1/en_US/i/btn/btn_donateCC_LG.gif" border="0" name="submit" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">PayPal - The safer, easier way to pay online!">
Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-52646608209412674632011-07-17T14:38:00.000-07:002011-07-20T13:28:38.149-07:00Sister Flora's Orphanage

The tone on the island was much better now than in December when the cholera was rampant. Life wasn't as strained as before and the stress level drop was very obvious. I searched out Father John, the priest who had set up the cholera treatment facility, he told me that on my previous visit the disease was at it's peak and that 1 in 10 residents had contracted cholera and 23 had died during the outbreak. There were no active cases on the island at this time and we exchanged contact information for further work together. The children at Flora's place were happy and looked healthy. If you ever thought that the Kids Against Hunger program didn't save lives, look at these photos and know that donated food is all these kids have to eat. They are just now finishing the food that we brought in December and this new shipment will get them thru the rest of 2011. It breaks your heart to visit this facility but I'm so thankful for Flora and her staff without whom these children would be just another statistic of the heart break that Haiti can be.

Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-87294565180563453142011-07-17T14:09:00.000-07:002011-07-17T14:38:17.710-07:00lle a vache, Haiti<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cPJnVc9Z61w/TiNU_aQl88I/AAAAAAAAAUQ/cORUz8J_7sw/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B183.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630437407500661698" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nSSyLWaEB5k/TiNU_AOfAeI/AAAAAAAAAUI/a1Lw43oT_3E/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B176.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630437400512496098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F-UxQKDb8ug/TiNU--ypkEI/AAAAAAAAAUA/5C__yODgpsQ/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B170.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630437400127311938" />
We dropped sail in Abaka Bay and once again entered Port Morgan just before sunup. Within 20 minutes my friend and translator Villeme came paddling out in a dugout to meet us. Within another 20 minutes he had made the arrangements for Sister Flora's panga to arrive within the hour to start the offloading of food and medical materials for the orphanage that Flora runs in the village of Madame Bernard. What a blessing it was to have the offload go so smoothly. By early afternoon Flora's place had received 4 tons of food, diapers, powered milk, medical supplies, and the stuffed animals that my Mom had made. David and I spent some time with Flora and the kids before returning to Port Morgan to arrange for 2 tons of food to go to an orphanage on the mainland in a town called Petite Rivere. I purchased 20 gallons of gas so the panga from Sister Flora would transport the 2 tons across the bay to the mainland, saving the schooner from having to deliver and keeping our location hidden.

Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-85461557479720666812011-07-17T13:16:00.000-07:002011-07-17T14:01:55.461-07:00Inagua to the south side of Haiti<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xbEYc0HFVmo/TiNMneTRSyI/AAAAAAAAAT4/JpcNiMak0r4/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B166.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630428200175749922" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vW_Pg_v49EQ/TiNMnHkBGnI/AAAAAAAAATw/uhiedO8zPTo/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630428194071976562" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tGHQF4trjkc/TiNMm62afCI/AAAAAAAAATo/DSxHXG2ss-E/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B158.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630428190659476514" />
At first light weather conditions had moderated a bit and we were underway by 0700. We had a sporty ride down to the entrance of the windward passage highlighted by David's short battle with a marlin. Our 50 lb test line was no match for this king of the ocean, in my old line of work we would have called this a Zinnng Poww, that's what it sounds like anyway! The prevailing swell found it's way far into the bight of Haiti so we had a rollee night at best. By the following midday we had worked down to Cape Tiburon on the South arm of Haiti. Rounding the corner it was back to bashing to windward against the trade winds. At Point Grotueax I took over the helm from a tired crewman and tacked over on a course for lle a vache.

Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4185820767052872169.post-12100584680679312242011-07-17T12:47:00.000-07:002011-07-17T13:15:09.764-07:00Great Inagua Standby<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SdcmxEyF2AA/TiNB87OjWUI/AAAAAAAAATg/KoTdxb51q8U/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B132.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630416474089937218" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vAGWtdLgFtc/TiNB8lxpffI/AAAAAAAAATY/Q5LcFn-D584/s320/Haiti%2B%25233%2B126.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630416468331560434" />
The weather forecast called for 8-12 ft seas and 30+ knots of wind, I've been in this same area with these conditions before and with a boat full of food and a crew that was still a little green I decided to wait out the night and see what the morning would bring (much to the relief of the crew!) I again encountered Brother Carl who invited the crew to his house for dinner. We listened to some recorded music that Carl had sung many years ago as his nephew Louis cooked dinner for us. After a wonderful meal Carl brought out his Bible and led a beautiful devotion for us from II Corinthians. In his 80's now, Brother Carl still does one on one ministry with some local men who are facing the problems of today, we were able to meet several of the men over the course of the evening and we all felt honored to share some time with this mighty man of God. Upon return to the schooner we saw that the mailboat was getting ready to leave and we took bets as to how he would maneuver to miss us on the way out

Captain Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08746029334122382237noreply@blogger.com0
